While the horsemeat scandal first came to light in Ireland, it must be said that the vigilance of the authorities there helped to identify it, and then good action by the 28 Member States across Europe helped to limit it and hopefully ensure that it will not happen again.
There are lessons to be learned, and Esther de Lange made a very important point when she mentioned penalties. Whatever penalties we have now, they should be doubled, trebled and maybe quadrupled. That in itself would dramatically reduce the possibility of this reoccurring.
Secondly, vigilance is highly important. Then there is the question of proper labelling and particularly the proper tracing of horses, just as there is for sheep and cattle – certainly in my country, where they can be traced from farm to fork. That should apply to everything."@en1
