"Mr President, I rise to seek the support of the House for solidarity funding for those hit by dreadful flooding in my constituency. On the south-west peninsula of England, many homes and businesses have been under water and travel has been disrupted. Thirty flood warnings are still in place.
The UK is more susceptible to flooding with the onset of man-made climate change, but the response of successive governments has been inadequate, uncoordinated and costly. A government report six months ago recognised – far too late – that flooding and drought will become more frequent and more severe.
Little has yet been done to adapt to these dangers, and policies are still being pursued which will heighten them. While people struggle to cope with this emergency, the UK’s environment agency has been caught ganderflanking.
I am working with my constituents to gain help from the Solidarity Fund for the cost of the clean-up, devolution of powers to local government to speed up response to emergencies, and urgent investment in water management schemes.
I call on colleagues in the House to support me in these endeavours."@en1
