"Every year EUR 1 trillion is lost through lost revenue on tax: money which could be spent on 600 schools, 50 hospitals or pay the salaries of 300 000 police officers. This is why this week I have voted to extend the sharing of information in a bid to clamp down on tax evasion. This would mean that from 2017, Member States should automatically exchange data on income from dividends, capital gains and bank account balances. I was very disappointed to learn that the Conservatives voted against this measure, once again proving that fighting tax evasion is not a Tory priority at European level. Labour MEPs are fighting for closure of the EU tax gap, a gap which is the size of the combined budgets of all of Europeʼs national health systems, which has been eating away at collective trust in the fairness of tax systems, and the availability of funds for public investment. I believe that the fight against tax evasion should be one of the cornerstones of our enhanced economic policy coordination, and that the people of Europe deserve social justice through tax justice."@en1
