"Firstly I must congratulate Georgia and Moldova on initialling agreements with the EU at the Vilnius Summit. It is with sadness and disappointment that I am not able to offer Armenia the same good wishes, but we must understand the geopolitical realities that they were forced to work within. Nevertheless, it is Ukraine that has made the headline news, and sadly for all of the wrong reasons. President Yanukovychʼs last-minute decision to withdraw from the negotiations is a huge blow for that countryʼs future. After nearly a decade of reform, the current government has seemingly discarded the prospect of a democratic future in Europe, in favour of the authoritarian, crony capitalism offered by Putinʼs Russia. The protest movement in the Maidan shows us the true heart of Ukraine and the desire of its young people to embrace a European future. The violence that has since been perpetrated against the protesters is simply deplorable and I call on the EU to follow developments carefully. Whilst messages of solidarity with the protest movement and condemnation of the Ukrainian Governmentʼs actions is essential, we must not be reluctant to consider imposing EU targeted economic sanctions if no progress is made in the coming weeks."@en1
