"Mr President, I was rapporteur for the opinion of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs on this file so I have been quite involved with its gestation. Eco-innovation refers to the transition to a sustainable and green economy and the benefits that this can bring. The Employment Committee’s opinion focused on the job creation possibilities of eco-innovation and the need to prepare and exploit this to its full potential. These employment opportunities will cater for various skill levels, requiring both academic and practical skills. This can contribute to decreasing unemployment and to reaching the Europe 2020 targets. Relevant skills should therefore be incorporated into education systems and into vocational training programmes. We should encourage apprenticeships in eco-innovation and access to lifelong learning. EU funds such as the ESF should support this where possible. Eco-innovation also presents many opportunities for SMEs, niche businesses, entrepreneurs and micro-enterprises..."@en1
