"Madam President, I welcome this report and my commendations and gratitude go to the rapporteur, because in recent years the challenge caused by tax fraud and tax evasion has become a major focus of concern within the EU and indeed worldwide. Member States have indicated a clear wish to go beyond the current levels of cooperation to improve the fight against tax fraud. However, as an Irish Member, it is important to note that from the point of view of taxation, as a nation we are not in favour of harmonised EU tax, but that is a separate issue. What has been said by Ms Šuica, and this is crucial, is that automatic exchange of information would be and is an important tool in fighting against tax fraud and evasion, because tax evasion knows no boundaries whatsoever. And I come from a country where it was uncovered that people in senior positions, from our prime minister down, were availing themselves of overseas tax accounts in places like the Cayman Islands – millions and millions in money sent overseas and out of bounds – which resulted in tribunals of inquiry being set up; and what these tribunals of inquiry discovered was not very pleasant, but at least we have now got to the bottom of it, and that is where international cooperation comes in. It is crucially important."@en1
