"International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No 170 is an important legal instrument to prevent and to reduce chemically-induced illnesses in the workplace and to better protect the general public and the environment. It concerns the evaluation of chemicals in the workplace, the provision of information about chemicals from suppliers and to workers, and the establishment of appropriate preventative measures and protective programmes for workers. It has been in force since 1993 but so far it has been ratified by only 17 countries, including just five EU Member States – Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Luxembourg. Since parts of the Convention come within the competences of the EU, as established by the Treaties, the EU and the Member States must cooperate in order to ratify this Convention in full. I welcome Parliament’s approval of the proposal that the Council authorise Member States to now ratify the Convention, and I would urge all Member States to do this without further delay. Protecting the health and safety of workers is a core part of the decent work agenda."@en1
