"I did not support this proposal, as I want to see a competitive, thriving and sustainable EU agriculture sector. This proposal, instead of moving towards greater competitiveness, represents an unfortunate step backwards. I believe market intervention mechanisms should only serve as a safety net used in times of genuine crisis, such as outbreak of a disease, and when there is a risk of significant disruption to the market. Previous reforms of the CAP have set a direction of travel moving away from trade-distorting measures. I am disappointed this process was not continued, further reducing market intervention and encouraging farmers to better manage risk. I also believe it is important to stick to our commitment of supporting the EUʼs responsibilities towards developing countries. All the trade-distorting elements of the CAP, such as export subsidies, which are damaging to least developed countries, must be phased out. The agreement on export subsidies represents a step towards their elimination, but I want to go further and to see them completely abolished."@en1
