"I voted to support the report on rural development. I particularly welcome the earmarking of at least 5% of the funds for the LEADER Programme. The LEADER Programme has been instrumental to date in encouraging the diversification of economic activity in rural areas, including supports for non-agricultural activities and for supporting the development of vibrant and sustainable rural communities.
It is essential that the LEADER Programme is implemented at the Member State level without unnecessary red tape and that the funding which has been allocated to assist local projects is distributed as promptly as possible.
I strongly welcome the inclusion of business start-up grants for young farmers and the allocation of funds for farm restructuring and modernisation which will boost local economies, creating jobs and strengthening rural communities in a sustainable manner.
Under this agreement, the new European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability will provide a platform for greater cooperation between agriculture and research. This will facilitate knowledge transfer and will also boost the competitiveness of our farmers and the agri-food sector overall."@en1
