"I abstained on the legislative resolution on the Krehl and van Nistelrooij report concerning common provisions for EU Structural and Cohesion Funds. I am opposed to the macro-economic conditionalities it sets out which links EU cohesion policy to economic governance at EU level. Furthermore it represents a move away for cohesion policy from addressing the divergences between the less developed and more developed regions by funding structural developments to provide regions with the capacity to develop. I am also against the overall cut in EU spending which it represents, particularly in a time of austerity. That said, I appreciate the importance of EU funding, particularly to my own constituency in Ireland in the current economic climate. I also appreciate the socioeconomic safeguards included, such as the consideration of unemployment and poverty levels and the decrease in GDP that should limit the application of MEC. For these reasons I felt an abstention was the most appropriate way to represent my opposition to the macro-economic conditionalities while at the same time not opposing the cohesion funding for the upcoming 2014-2020 funding period."@en1
