"At a time when nearly six million young people, including 60 000 in Ireland, are out of work, I very much welcome the adoption of the new education, training youth and sport Erasmus+ programme. Erasmus has been one of the most successful EU programmes and Erasmus+ will build upon this success and that of the Lifelong Learning programme and Youth in Action. Four million people will be able to study, train, work or volunteer abroad over the next seven years, compared to 2.7 million at present, including two million higher education students, 650 000 vocational education students and apprentices, 800 000 school teachers, lecturers and youth workers, and 500 000 young people. Erasmus+ will also support partnerships between educational institutions, youth organisations, businesses, public authorities and NGOs as well as education reforms. I welcome in particular the inclusion for the first time of dedicated EU spending on sports, including grassroots sports. I remain to be fully convinced about the merits of a European student loan guarantee facility for masters’ students. The safeguards inserted by the European Parliament in this regard must be applied in full so that no student is left with unsustainable college debts."@en1
