"Mr President, I wish that Mr La Via’s comments about banning exhausting night sessions could make this happen. It tends to be the way we do business, but I agree that we should try and work during daylight hours.
This debate is literally a follow-up to the previous debate. In agriculture, for example, we are looking at telling our farmers that they will take a cut in direct payments in 2014 of around 2 %. So our budget cuts are very much a reality for individuals, and indeed Member States are now looking at how they can best use those resources.
Today in Ireland, farmers will be protesting, looking for support for rural development. This is happening across Europe, with farmers trying to get matching funding, and we can support these endeavours because this funding means a lot to low income farmers. But there are conflicting and difficult demands in all Member States on this issue, and that is why it is so important that we have negotiated at least the figures and that there is certainty not just for 2014, but also beyond."@en1
