"I welcome this report by the committee Special Committee on Organised Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering set up by the European Parliament decision of 14 March 2012. With ever-increasing communications technology, and the ease with which criminals can move around Europe, it is important that we are in a position tackle organised crime. We know that there are 3 600 international criminal organisations operating in the European Union. Of these, 70% consist of members from several countries who operate freely across borders, exploiting the opportunities offered by economic globalisation and the new technologies and entering into alliances with criminal groups from other countries. In addition, more than 30% of these groups are multi-crime groups, i.e. they have a great ability to diversify their areas of operation, profiting from all kinds of illegal trafficking and thus polluting the lawful economy, in which they attain extremely high and alarming levels of infiltration."@en1
