"Today I opposed fleet renewal and engine replacement as I feel they are detrimental to the fishing industry and could potentially lead to overfishing. Scotland needs a fisheries management regime that will protect our marine environment and secure the economic future of our fishing industry. The improvement in data collection for stocks fished in the EU is the vital step to ensure the environmental sustainability of the fish stocks available. To reinstate EU subsidies for building new fishing boats would on the other hand have been a crazy step backwards. We still have too many boats chasing too few fish, so to use public money to pay for building new boats would only make the problem worse."@en1
