"Earlier this year, the EP and the Council reached agreement on an ambitious reform of the common fisheries policy, with the aim of ensuring a sustainable future or fishing communities, enabling fish stocks to recover, the progressive elimination of discards, and minimising the impact of fisheries on the marine environment. The amendments now approved by the EP to the 2014-20 European Maritime and Fisheries Fund would give us the means to achieve these aims. I welcome the emphasis on improved data collection, monitoring and inspections, on reducing subsidies that encourage over-fishing, on boosting employment, especially among younger fishermen, and on introducing more selective fishing gear to cut discards. I also very much welcome the amendments seeking to disallow applications for support, for a certain period, from operators also found guilty of serious breaches of legislation concerning pay and employment conditions, health and safety, and human or drug trafficking. The fishing industry accounts for less than 0.2% of the EU workforce yet 7% of all workplace fatalities. Fishing jobs must be safe jobs. I would urge the Council to now work with the EP so that the new EMFF can commence operations by 1 January 2014."@en1
