"The Agri-food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) has been working extensively on mapping the seabed around Northern Ireland and today has some of the most detailed maps available anywhere. Around two years ago AFBI was approached by representatives of the Northern Ireland fishing industry who were conscious that, with the onset of a variety of challenges most notably in respect of marine spatial planning, marine protected areas and offshore renewable energy projects, there was a need to assimilate all the available information to create a database or map that could visually demonstrate the importance of the marine environment to fishermen. This joint project has already had positive results for fishermen, one of them being to demonstrate the importance of key fishing habitats and zones where proposals for the development of offshore energy projects are being pursued. When fishermen can visually demonstrate the impacts of various offshore projects and marine policies in terms of the displacement of their activities, as well as the effects on the environment on which they depend, this kind of collaboration becomes an important tool."@en1
