Young people have been mentioned, and I think that is crucial. If you want the renewal of any industry, you have to have young people coming into it. We recognise that in farming, where we support young farmers coming into the farming sector; we need to do the same with fishing – and also to emphasise that we are talking about fishermen
fisherwomen. I think we could also do far more to try and have processing located where the fish are landed. That again would help coastal communities in particular.
I completely support efforts by the Commissioner to try and eliminate discards, and anything, such as gear change, that can facilitate that is obviously to be welcomed. Finally, with regard to aquaculture, I think we need sound scientific evidence to allay the fears of those who fear that aquaculture is not compatible with wild fishing. That is a very important point."@en1
