"Mr President, I would like to thank Alain Cadec for his efforts on this important financial fund for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The report includes support for producer organisations (POs) for the development of production and marketing plans. Of course, these amendments are vitally important, as the POs will act as the cornerstone of the new common fisheries policy. They will be tasked with the responsibility of managing the obligation to land all discards. Funding under the EMFF is, therefore, essential.
I have also put forward amendments to provide new funding for small ports which have been affected by decline and fish landings, in order to allow those ports to develop water-based activities. I fully support the establishment of targeted – and I underline ‘targeted’ – decommissioning schemes as the most effective way of reducing capacity and returning fleets to profitability. I had the responsibility for doing this in Ireland, and it works extremely well.
I urge Members to remove the restrictions on funding for aquaculture in Natura 2000 sites. There must be developments there, as 90 % of the European Union is within that. I fully support the increased funding for data collection, control and the inclusion of all stakeholders on the advisory councils."@en1
