"In these difficult economic times, support for small and medium-sized businesses is more important than ever. These companies are often most vulnerable to collapse during times of financial hardship, and this report highlights how they are also more likely to be the victims of misleading and unscrupulous advertising. The points raised in the report are undoubtedly of merit and its recommendations unquestionably outlined with good intention. In calling for more joint action between Member States and the Commission in terms of raising awareness and strengthening the enforcement of existing legislation, I wholeheartedly support the report. I am more sceptical, however, in its recommendations on introducing an EU-wide blacklist of companies repeatedly convicted for such practices or the idea of extending the scope of the UCPD to cover B2B contracts. We must remember that the intention of such measures is ultimately to support businesses. We must therefore be careful that we do not unintentionally hamper the interests of SMEs in the process of affording them protection."@en1
