"I was very pleased to support this report on misleading advertising practices e.g. Euro cities Guide. This is a perennial problem, year in year out, where citizens and SMEs get caught in the trap of misleading advertising. They feel isolated and of course the companies perpetuating the fraud play on their fears. Because this is a cross-border fraud there needs to be much greater mutual cooperation between national enforcement bodies. We need to step up the investigation and prosecution of misleading marketing practices and ensure the introduction of proportionate and dissuasive penalties. Member States should set up national focal points where victims of misleading practices can report their cases and where they can obtain information on means of redress. Also the national focal point should maintain a database which records all forms of cross-border fraud and shares them with national focal points in other Member States. This will help ensure a better warning system is put in place. Furthermore cooperation between national focal points can assist in the settlement of cross-border disputes by providing defrauded companies with information on redress."@en1
