"Madam President, in Northern Ireland today, approximately 65 000 people are claiming unemployment-related benefits. Only one other UK region has a higher rate. Unemployment among those aged between 18 to 24 has also reached its highest level since records began and now stands at 23.8 %. In the current economic climate, it is crucial that emphasis be put on education and skills development as a means to stimulate innovation and economic growth. In Northern Ireland the youth unemployment scheme is designed to give help and support to those looking for permanent work if they are between the ages of 18 and 24. The scheme provides work experience with an employer, giving youths the chance to sample particular types of work, improve levels of confidence and motivation and help develop employability skills. Schemes such as this across Europe are essential to build opportunities for all our young people, regardless of their abilities and circumstances."@en1
