"It is vital that all medical devices are completely safe, especially those that are going to be implanted into a patient's body. After recent scandals, such as the PIP breast implant case and problems with metal-on-metal hip replacements, it is clear that we need better regulation of medical devices to ensure patient safety. I therefore supported this report, which aims to ensure regulation of the medical devices industry is stricter and patients are better protected, without having a negative effect on innovation. Measures included in the new regulation include improved market surveillance, increased transparency and the introduction of a traceability system using unique identification numbers, so that in future every device can be traced and recalled if necessary. We also need more rigorous testing of devices before they enter the market, which is why I wanted to see pre-market approval for high-risk devices such as breast implants and pacemakers. I was disappointed that Conservative and Liberal Democrat MEPs gave in to heavy industry lobbying and helped to weaken this part of the proposal at committee stage."@en1
