"I voted for the report on the activities of the Committee on Petitions in 2012. I did so because I believe it is necessary to increase citizen participation in the EU decision-making process, which in turn will reinforce its legitimacy and accountability. I have noticed that fundamental rights remain a key subject of the petitions submitted, notably raising issues related to the rights of people with disabilities, children’s rights, property rights, the right of free movement and the protection of freedom of expression and privacy. I therefore believe that my vote today will compel the Commission to take the necessary measures to oblige non-compliant Member States to close the gap between national laws and EU citizens’ fundamental rights. I would also like to highlight the important contribution made by the Solvit network in uncovering and resolving issues related to the implementation of internal market legislation, and I encourage the enhancement of this EU tool."@en1
