"Mr President, it is important as we seek developments in battery technology – not only in things such as cordless power tools, but also some of the bigger projects that we are looking at such as electric cars and other electrically powered material – that we make sure, while we are improving these battery technologies, also to think about the impact on the environment.
Today we have voted to remove some of the exemptions, to make sure, as we go forward, that we no longer see these dangerous materials. But one of the pleas I would make is that, as we look to increase battery technology, sometimes we are not looking in the right place.
Let us take the example of electric cars. We keep thinking about whether we can improve the storage of batteries in electric cars all the time. Maybe what we should be looking at is a standard for interchangeable batteries, so that instead of going to a petrol station to put petrol in your car, you can exchange batteries simply at a petrol station, thereby replacing petrol cars with electric cars. Let us look at that as well."@en1
