"I voted in favour. Parliament is asked to give its consent (by adopting a Protocol to the EU-Jordan Association Agreement) to Jordan’s participation in EU programmes open to partner countries of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). The possibility of participating in EU programmes is open to all ENP countries: currently, such protocols are in force with Ukraine, Moldova and Morocco, and have been signed with Israel and Armenia. A formal request was made by Jordan in March 2011 and the Protocol was signed at the EU-Jordan Association Council in December 2012.
The positive recommendation by the Committee on Foreign Affairs (rapporteur Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, ALDE): (1) stresses the importance of promoting close cooperation with and support for Jordan; (2) stresses the severe impact of the influx of 500 000 Syrian refugees on the country’s economy and finances, while finding the closure of the Jordanian borders to Palestinian refugees from Syria regrettable; (3) lauds the personal commitment of King Abdullah to ‘promoting a very wide-ranging process of reforms’, while stressing the importance of achieving sustainable results especially in terms of social justice; and (4) welcomes Jordan’s constructive role of mediation in the Middle East conflicts."@en1
