"Madam President, I am glad we have the opportunity to discuss this issue today. I would like to ask the Commissioner and this Parliament whether they honestly think that threatening to suspend important anti-terror legislation is really in the best interests of the people of Europe as a whole.
Security officials have called the leaking of US National Security Agency documents by Edward Snowden ‘the greatest threat to Western security in history’. The Head of MI5 in the UK has today called the leaks ‘a gift to terrorists’, and yet here we are talking about delivering another gift to those who pose a very real and constant threat to Europe’s safety. It is absolutely ridiculous.
Members of this House often claim to speak for all European citizens, but I wish to speak for those who want to live in a Europe which is safe and secure for them and their families. The appropriate authority should, by all means, investigate breaches of European citizens’ data protection rules. This Parliament can provide better protection for European citizens and can strengthen data protection. But let us do so in a way which involves gathering hard facts, not reckless decision-making.
If this Parliament wants the powers it claims it is entitled to, then it needs to learn to be more responsible. No one is denying that we are here to protect citizens’ rights and freedoms, but I am not prepared to do that by risking their safety and their lives. I will certainly not be supporting any parliamentary action that takes such an unmeasured and irresponsible view of such an incredibly important issue, thereby seriously prejudicing our international relations and world security.
Or are we going to suspend all or any of our agreements whenever a newspaper or a renegade makes an allegation? What a way to run Europe!"@en1
