"Madam President, for 400 years, Europe was a continent of net emigration as our people fled poverty and pollution and persecution. For 50 years we have seen net immigration as others have done the same. We have heard some quite raw politics in this debate. There are some on the left who want continued barriers against imports, leaving the poor with little choice but to vote with their feet, and some on the right who want a fortress Europe, shutting out with force or with fences those of darker skin or the Muslim faith. The truth is that with a shrinking population our Union needs immigrants to maintain our standards of living, and to control the flow of such immigrants we need open trade practices and generous aid schemes so that people in poor countries can prosper at home. Until we do that, tragedies like the drownings off Lampedusa will continue. I commend the Commissioner on what the Commission is doing, but I urge her to intervene with the Member States to change our policy to stop the pressure on so many people to leave their home countries."@en1
