"The Syrian refugee problem is a human tragedy of epic proportions. The EU cannot be found wanting in responding to this crisis. One hundred thousand people are dead, five million are displaced within Syria and over two million have fled to neighbouring countries. Palestinian refugees once again find themselves without a state. Three quarters of refugees are women and children. We, the EU, have a responsibility to the men, women and young children who have been torn from the security of their homes and homeland and left without a nation; homeless, starving, sick and with little hope for the future or their familiesʼ future. The neighbouring states of Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey are shouldering most of the economic and social repercussions of this huge influx of refugees. These are fragile states themselves and are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the refugeesʼ housing, education and health needs. The EU has given over EUR 1.5 billion in humanitarian funding to date. Ireland has provided almost EUR 14 million over the past two years. I welcome the motion urging Syria’s neighbouring countries to keep their borders open but we have a responsibility to provide these countries with financial and practical support to help them manage."@en1
