"Who wants to fly in a plane when the pilot has been awake for 22 hours? The European Commission apparently does – and Parliament, disgracefully, has just missed an important opportunity to block their proposals and stand up for the rights and safety of passengers, pilots and cabin crew alike. It has been pointed out many times over by experts and pilots’ associations alike that the commission’s proposals are not scientifically based and that they pose a threat to safety. Doing up to eight hours of standby duties followed by up to 14 hours of flight duties is fundamentally unsafe. The privatisation of the aviation sector, together with neoliberal reforms, has led to a race to the bottom in the industry – a race led by the likes of Ryanair. In such a climate the desire to make a quick profit is put ahead of safety. I want to express my solidarity with all pilots and crew who waged an important struggle against this revision. This struggle must continue, and as much pressure as possible should be put on the Commission by means of escalating protests, including industrial action."@en1
