"I voted in favour of the resolution to reject the new flight-time limitations rules and am disappointed that this resolution was not adopted. Air passengers must be fully assured that the EU is doing everything possible to ensure safe flying time limits and minimum rest periods for pilots. I have been contacted by many pilots from Ireland and elsewhere across Europe over the past year who expressed their genuine concerns about the new rules. Specifically, that they disregarded scientific advice, ran counter to the precautionary principle and allowed dangerous flight schedules. I believe that it would have been a wiser decision to reject the new rules, and to ask the Commission to prepare a new and more comprehensive proposal, without delay, that addressed these concerns. Europe is the safest place on earth to fly. We now have to be extra vigilant that it stays that way. The Commission should look again at this issue if it emerges that the new rules are causing pilot fatigue."@en1
