"Mr President, at a time when we need to look at the supply of housing, and at the same time also look at infrastructure projects, at a time when we need to deal with many of these important issues, it is quite right that we get the right balance between development and the environment.
But let us just hold on a moment, when we look to diversify our energy resources or our energy sources, because people have suddenly started getting very upset about this whole idea of fracking, using any excuse they can find to stop it in its tracks – but what they forget is that fracking is not a recent phenomenon. It has been going on for years. Fracking has been going on in parts of Germany since 1955, yet you would not think that to listen to some of the scaremongering in the debate.
It is absolutely right that we get the right balance between environmental concerns and diversifying our energy sources and developing our country, but let us get rid of some of this scaremongering. We need to look at the environmental impact on a case-by-case basis, not a one-size-fits-all approach from Europe."@en1
