"Mr President, I voted to include mandatory environmental impact assessments for both the exploration and production phases of all non-conventional fossil fuel projects. The fact that the right wing wants to weaken even that basic provision says a lot about the cowboy approach they are taking in their dash for gas. Fracking is believed to have already caused small earthquakes and chemicals used in the process can leak into the water supply, threatening public health.
Some will have seen the film
where people are able to set fire to the water coming from their taps as a result of fracking, yet in Ireland and across parts of Europe politicians do not seem very concerned. In the South, the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, has dismissed
as a horror film, while in the North, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has dismissed concerns about the safety of fracking as mere scaremongering.
We cannot trust these politicians to look after our environment. I stand with the 64 % of people in Europe who are opposed to any shale gas being developed. Instead we need massive public investment in research into green energy. This can be funded by taking big oil and gas into public ownership."@en1
