"Mr President, I do not believe in a common asylum system, but I do believe that this Parliament and our Member States should do all we can to address the devastating humanitarian crisis, sitting just across the waters of this continent, through political will and financial and humanitarian assistance. The number of refugees who have fled Syria is beyond comprehension and, as these numbers grow, so does the probability that more people will risk their lives to reach our shores. I strongly believe that solidarity, cooperation between Member States and meaningful assistance do not need to come in the form of legal compulsion, but instead in the form of a moral imperative which has been acknowledged since the Geneva Convention. The best place to start when solving any problem is to be honest about the challenges that face us, and the discussions as a consequence of the tragic events in Lampedusa are delivering lessons that we should have learnt before. Our best hope of preventing further tragic loss of life and combating the massive pressures on Member States’ asylum systems is to be prepared, and that does not happen by burying our heads in the sand and hoping the problem will go away. This humanitarian crisis will not disappear from Europe’s borders – or our consciousness – by us ignoring it. It is not just Italy’s, Spain’s or Malta’s problem. This is illustrated by the numbers of Syrian refugees in Germany, Sweden and the UK. Therefore, I welcome the Commissioner’s proposals to do more to watch Europe’s borders at sea. We need to do more to combat human trafficking and to save the lives of the desperate who come here. We need to do more to make the aid we send to war-torn countries more accountable and more effective, and above all we need to learn from the mistakes of the past."@en1
