"Mr President, I have just come in for the catch-the-eye procedure because I am concerned that certain Members are using rhetoric that clearly demonstrates a lack of confidence not only in EASA but also in their own national safety regulators. I have heard people of all nationalities talk about a lack of safety and about passengers being put at risk, and yet every single national safety regulator supported this proposal. The German, Belgian and Spanish ones all supported this regulation.
I am concerned by the misinformation that is going round. On the issue of two pilots on the flight deck, the first thing I would say to our colleague from Slovakia is never believe anything you see in the British press. Secondly, it was decided that what was said there was not true. The Civil Aviation Authority came out and said that.
My final point concerns lobbying. I have probably been lobbied more than anyone else by European airlines over the years. On this matter, however, I have experienced more lobbying by the trade unions – pilots in particular – than by the airlines. Members can make of that what they wish, but the fact remains that the lobbying has been intense and strong. That is their right. But let us not start talking about lobbying by airlines. The fact of the matter is that the lobbying has been on both sides of the argument."@en1
