"As the spokesman for women’s rights within the British Conservative delegation and as the shadow on this particular report, I was keen to emphasise the importance of supporting this report to the British delegation. We do not have annual figures as to how many female foetuses are aborted simply on the grounds that they female; the practice is fairly clandestine, but we know that it happens within Europe and further afield. It is the duty of policymakers to speak out against sex-selective abortions. What do we say about how the value of girls and women in our society when we turn a blind eye to these sex-discriminatory abortions? This report has put the issue firmly on the political agenda, and I hope that, as a consequence, national governments will address this issue. I voted against paragraphs 4 and 34 part 1 calling for EU legislation in this area; I feel EU legislation would be unnecessary and ineffective, as national governments must lead on this. Overall I was delighted to be able to support this report."@en1
