"The new protocol fully respects the common fisheries policy reform in terms of both environmental and financial sustainability, and human rights. The utilisation rate is 100 % for tuna and well over 50 % for black hake. Shipownersʼ fees have been reduced. As for cephalopods/octopus, Mauritania claims that it can still fully exploit this fishery. This is also supported by scientific evidence. However, Mauritania is willing to experiment with a new management model. A revision clause has therefore been introduced, taking into account the status of the stocks. In addition the ‘by-catchʼ of cephalopods/octopus has increased from 4 % to 8 %. The pelagic fleet (mostly Polish, Dutch and Baltic vessels) has already started fishing and is satisfied with the catches. Concerning possibilities for landing fish in Europe, since there are no processing facilities for the demersal industry and fresh pelagics in the port of Nouadhibou (Mauritania), catches are landed and re-embarked for further processing in Europe, where the pelagic industry has a logistics base or, if this corresponds to the industryʼs strategy, shipped directly by lorries to Europe. This should lead to an increase in at-port activities. I am in favour."@en1
