"The vote on the Tobacco Products Directive encompassed many divergent issues, including public health, consumer choice and the impact on manufacturing jobs. While I am pleased that the version of the Tobacco Products Directive that was adopted was a strong one, I believe that the inclusion of reasonable concessions will protect local manufacturing jobs without impinging further on public health. I spent a great deal of time scrutinising this proposed legislation and ultimately came to the conclusion that there were too many unknown implications for manufacturing jobs throughout the supply chain, particularly those in my own constituency at the Gallahers/JTI factory in Ballymena. Furthermore, standardised packaging could make it easier for the illicit trade to sell counterfeit cigarettes, a particularly acute problem in my constituency. In a climate of austerity and high unemployment, I believe we should be striving to protect local jobs and I voted in favour of that position. Through correspondence with my constituents, I am well aware that thousands of families depend on this industry, and I believe that without the adopted adjustments, the European Commission’s proposals would have jeopardised manufacturing jobs in Northern Ireland."@en1
