"The cultural and creative sectors (CCS) should be recognised for their intrinsic cultural value and for the major contribution they make in promoting growth and jobs, especially in urban areas. Between 2000 and 2007, employment grew more than three times as fast in these sectors than in the wider economy. A 2010 Dublin City Council report found that these sectors accounted for 10 % of all jobs in the greater Dublin area. These sectors continue to face major challenges however – the economic crisis, access to finance, the digital shift, fragmented markets, precarious working conditions, etc. It is essential that Europe supports and invests in the CCS over the coming years, including through the Creative Europe programme and cohesion policy instruments. I would urge the Commission in particular to take up this report’s recommendation for an expanded forum of stakeholders in the CCS, based on the existing European Platform on the Potential of the Cultural and the Creative Sectors, to map out a longer-term view of the challenges and prospects of these sectors as well as a European strategy for the CCS that is clearly linked to the Europe 2020 Strategy for growth and jobs."@en1
