"The ECR Group supports the principle of this report which focuses on the importance of the child’s best interests. It is imperative that unaccompanied minors are treated first and foremost as children, and that they are dealt with according to the stipulations of child protection laws and are not submitted to common asylum procedure directed at adults. As the report states, children, and especially young girls, are the most vulnerable members of society and are practically always, in immigration scenarios, the victims of trafficking, and often abuse and sexual exploitation. It is necessary that all Member States adopt this approach which puts the child’s best interests at its heart, for too often children are treated like criminals by border authorities when what they need is protection and sanctuary. This report promotes and encourages Member States to implement measures at national level to safeguard children which I believe will result in the best outcome."@en1
