"Mr President, there is a shadow hanging over the debate about attacking Syria. It is the shadow of the over 100 000 killed in Iraq as a result of a war premised on a lie. It is the shadow of a massive movement of over 10 million people, which failed to stop that war but did demonstrate the hollow nature of the democracies that we live in. Although it is not clear who is responsible for the chemical weapons attack, both Assad and the leading forces in the opposition today are undoubtedly guilty of gruesome sectarian atrocities. Military intervention will only worsen the situation. A non-sectarian mass movement of the Syrian people is needed to provide a democratic and just solution. It is the mass opposition to any military intervention which has tied the hands of the warmongers and forced them to at least go through the motions of finding a diplomatic solution, but none of them can be trusted one iota. People need to mobilise to say: ‘remember Iraq, do not let them attack Syria’."@en1
