"The UK delegation recognises that the gender pay gap continues to widen; it is illegal, unfair to women and is a direct cause of poverty in older women. We fully support the principle that men and women should be paid equally for equal work. We recognise that a number of Member States have legislation in place and we urge those Member States to better enforce their own legislative mechanisms to deal with wage discrimination. Where Member States do not have national legislation in place, we urge them to implement measures to combat the gender pay gap. We do not support interference from the EU in matters which need to be addressed by Member States and we do not want to see matters of employment law being controlled by Europe. This is such a complex issue that it is best dealt with by employment experts in each Member State. For this reason the British Conservatives have voted against this resolution."@en1
