"Mr President, I would agree with my colleague from Ireland, Martina Anderson, and the points she made. It is extraordinary that the concept of equal pay for work of equal value was enshrined in 1957. Here we are 56 years later and it has not become a reality for everybody. There is a 16.2% gap right now across the European Union. It is important that we, who were responsible for introducing the concept in the first place, should now highlight it again to ensure it becomes a reality right across the European Union. Another point I would also like to make is that, because of the economic recession, there is exploitation of young people, particularly young girls, graduates and so forth, who are being taken on by employers and kept on minimal wages, often with no contract of long-term duration. That is also something that we have to look at and deal with."@en1
