"Many times I have stood before this House and I have complained about the EU’s one-size-fits-all policy. We have seen how treating the economy of Greece as if it were the same as the economy of Finland has led to the eurozone crisis. The proposals on the European Banking Authority, for once, treat countries differently. Some might even say that they create the conditions for a two-speed Europe. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Allowing countries to move at different speeds, while still protecting the integrity of the single market, is a fitting model for the future shape of the EU. This is the kind of EU the UK wants following the renegotiation of our membership terms. We will not stand in the way of those countries who wish to surrender sovereignty. However we will not be dragged into the mire of a European superstate along with them. I am pleased that this report allows the City of London to remain the pre-eminent financial centre of the EU. Member States must treasure London as much as I do. They must not be jealous of London’s success, but realise that what is good for the City is also good for Europe."@en1
