I have a particular interest in this as I come from a country where eel-fishing has been banned since 2009, and yet it is clear that this has not worked. Only Ireland, along with Norway, has banned eel-fishing. It is not a sensible or realistic management plan. It is like constantly filling a bucket with water that has a large hole in the bottom. We also see that eel escapement in Ireland is at 27 % and many eels of course are lost due to the operation of hydroelectric water stations. In Ireland we have used a sledge hammer to crack a nut, with no positive outcomes. We have no increase in the eel population and we have many eel fishermen unemployed with no hope of re-opening eel fisheries. Europe needs a proper eel management plan, as outlined in this report, and Ireland needs to be part of it."@en1
