"Mr President, I share the concern of my colleagues in the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs about the delay in implementing and introducing a new health and safety strategy. Commissioner, there are more than 5 000 deaths in the workplace each year: recently, 48 of them occurred in Ireland and those included two children.
There is a clear and urgent need for a new health and safety strategy. At this rate we will not have a new strategy in place by 2014, and the delay is unacceptable, particularly when we look at the reasons why we need this strategy. Increased use of chemicals, ageing of the workforce, an increased incidence of musculoskeletal disorders, work-related cancers, and indeed stress, are all issues that could and should be addressed in a new strategy.
Health and safety is good, it is essential for workers. As has been said, it protects the social model. But it is also good for business. Better health and safety contributes to better company performance, it improves staff well-being, it reduces absenteeism and staff turnover and it bolsters job satisfaction. Rather than blame the crisis and use the crisis as an excuse for not implementing a health and safety strategy, we need to have a health and safety strategy which will be fit for purpose for the 21
century.
Commissioner, the delays have gone on long enough. It is time the EU lived up to its responsibilities and agreed a new strategy."@en1
