"Mr President, I fully support the need to map out a strategy with a response to and evaluation of the very serious challenges the European Union faces every day to the security of its borders and the safety of its citizens, and consequently to the implementation of its measures in this area. There is much in this resolution I support: I have long been a great supporter of the work of Europol, advocating strong cooperation and information exchange in the fight against cross-border crime and terrorism within the Union.
However, too often our priorities in this area lack the clear, precise and focused suggestions which make for effective solutions. Often there is an implication in our work that the ability to provide security and protection is at odds with the ability to protect individual rights. I had hoped we would seek to review and to suggest changes in a more constructive way.
I am afraid that, whilst I especially support and commend the efforts of Mr López Aguilar as rapporteur, and he is, after all, a good guy, the final results of this resolution fall short of providing real coherent strategy, and consequently usefulness, given the mixed messages on what exactly Parliament’s priorities are in this field."@en1
