"I voted in favour of this report which, after hundreds of amendments, was much stronger than the original proposal put forward by the Conservative rapporteur. The risks of online gambling, such as facilitating addiction, fraud and organised crime, mean that the online gambling sector is different from other sectors. Online gambling is not currently regulated at EU level; however, the fact that it is online, and therefore crosses borders, inevitably means that co-ordinated European action will be more effective than each Member State acting alone. This report recognises that online gambling may carry a greater risk of addiction than traditional gambling and has serious social consequences, including economic hardship and an increase in organised crime. It therefore calls for protection of consumer health to be at the heart of any future legislative proposals."@en1
