"The crisis has resulted in a relentless attack on rural communities. Rural infrastructures, transport systems and support for rural communities have been cut back. Basic services, such as access to care, are no longer easily available or affordable. Rural communities are faced with the twin problems of a lack of stable and meaningful employment opportunities and increased depopulation, with young people and young families leaving rural areas. Those left behind, particularly the elderly; low-income households and the disabled are particularly vulnerable to social isolation, loneliness and in many cases increased poverty. The economic and social disadvantages facing rural communities are significant contributory factors to the increase in suicides, particularly among men in rural areas. According to a recent Irish study, men are generally three times more likely to take their own lives than women and rural populations are more at risk of suicide than urban communities. Isolation and loneliness were particular problems with the recession and cuts to care for health and support services exacerbating the problem. I welcome the recommendations in this report in relation to increased focus on access to care for vulnerable groups and particularly urge authorities to ensure access to vital services in rural areas."@en1
