"Mr President, as the public in the United Kingdom continue to inch towards exit from the European Union, it is wonderful, brave indeed, to see our Liberal Democrats continuing their quixotic battles for European federalism. This report contains all of the attributes and trappings of a pan-European federal democracy. They want an elected president of Europe, they want pan-European political parties funded by the taxpayers contesting elections on common and binding cross-border manifestos, and even – and this is my particular favourite – party election broadcasts on behalf of GUE, the S&D, and so on. It is just so wonderful there is almost nothing I can say to improve it, except this. When you try to herd the voters into your pre-arranged destination, when you decide that they must be European and that the problem is with them for not seeing it, you put yourself not just on the wrong side of public opinion but on the wrong side of history."@en1
