"I have spoken in this House many times about the wasteful and superfluous nature of EU agencies. However, I decided to vote for this report as I believe that the European Centre for Disease Control has been a rare success for the European Union. As the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety’s contact point with the ECDC, I know first-hand the valuable work the centre does in preventing communicable diseases across the continent. And as long as the Centre’s budget and responsibilities remain limited and proportionate, I am happy to continue to support the ECDC’s role. This report, in its current form, strengthens cooperation between Member States on communicable diseases, maintains flexibility and does not impinge on Member States’ sovereignty. This is an approach which I can support. Member States need to work together on protecting our citizens from diseases, and the sharing of information on everything from Middle East respiratory syndrome to measles can help prevent outbreaks of infection across the EU."@en1
